State Supreme Court Accredits PBA Workers' Compensation Law Section as Certifying Organization
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has approved the recommendation of the PBA Review and Certifying Board to grant accreditation to the PBA Workers' Compensation Law Section as a certifying organization in workers' compensation law. With the Supreme Court order, the section becomes the first bar association entity in the state to become a certifying organization. Read the media release.
 
PBA Launches 'Recruit & Cruise' Membership Campaign
The PBA has a launched the "Recruit & Cruise" membership campaign. Each participating PBA member who recruits five new dues-paying members earns a chance to win a $2,500 cruise for two to a destination of his or her choice. March/April Lawyer Magazine Explores Marcellus Shale Play
The next issue of The Pennsylvania Lawyer magazine features a variety of lawyer-written articles on the impact and implications of the ongoing Marcellus Shale gas exploration boom. Additional feature articles look as practicing law in France; the impact of mock trial experience on young lawyers; and the role of the Bar Leadership Institute in developing the next generation of PBA leaders. Among the regular columns, "Ethics Digest" covers Joint Formal Opinion 2011-100 on representing clients in limited-scope engagements. Watch for the March/April issue of the PBA member magazine, in the mail the week of Feb. 26.

Chief Justice Thanks Lawyers for Pro Bono Services, Urges Continued Support in 2012
Chief Justice of Pennsylvania Ronald D. Castille recently issued a letter of thanks to the thousands of Pennsylvania lawyers who provided more than 114,000 hours of direct pro bono ("for the public good") service to the poor through legal aid programs in 2011. But Castille also noted that "now is not the time to rest on our laurels," encouraging lawyers to continue providing pro bono service in the face of funding cuts to legal aid programs while the number of those in need is rising. ABA Urges Bar Associations to Educate Public on Need for Court Funding
American Bar Association President William T. Robinson has called on bar associations across the country to join in educating the public about the need for adequate funding for state judicial systems. PBA members are encouraged to become familiar with the issues involved in assuring sustainable funding for Pennsylvania's courts. Useful resources include the January 2012 symposium issue of The Pennsylvania Bar Association Quarterly, the commentary by Robinson in the January/February 2012 issue of The Pennsylvania Lawyer magazine and an informative video produced by the ABA.

Cabell Named Legislative Director
Fredrick Cabell Jr. of Harrisburg has been named director of the PBA Legislative Relations Department. A lawyer with experience on Capitol Hill, in the Office of Attorney General and in private practice, Cabell joins the PBA from the Pennsylvania Builders Association, where he was director of governmental relations.
